69 Mach1 coil and leaf spring and prop shaft colour code marks
« on: February 17, 2018, 06:14:01 PM »
I'm in the process of restoring my 69 Mach1 and would like to replicate the factory colour code paint mark's on the prop shaft and the front and rear springs. My car was sold here in the UK new in 69. It has a 351W 4v, FMX, standard ratio non locking axle. Visibility and light group, rear seat sport deck, PS, PDB,manual air con, AM radio, tinted glass complete and tacho. Colour is Black Jade with black interior. There was no build sheet in the car when I stripped it apart, the info here came from Ford in 1988 when I sent them the VIN code for clarification, the car was built at the Edison, New Jersey plant for export. Thanks for any help.

First - welcome to the site. Hope you find the information and support here helpful in your restoration focused needs.

First we need more information to help.

................... It has a 351W 4v, FMX, standard ratio non locking axle. Visibility and light group, rear seat sport deck, PS, PDB,manual air con, AM radio, tinted glass complete and tacho................ the car was built at the Edison, New Jersey plant for export. .

When was your car built?

You wrote "manual air conditioning"   guess that confirms that the car had factory air conditioning.

The VIN number is 9T02M190345, the engine number is H190345. I don't have the warranty plate to hand at the moment, when I go to my workshop next I will make a note of the info on it. The car was registered here in the UK on the 12th of September 1969. It probably sat around for a while in customs before being released to the importer or may have been a personal import. I now have all the name's of the previous owner's to me from 1969. How were exported cars sold, was there a specialist department in Ford or would it have been ordered through a dealership. Thanks for your help. Yes the car has factory aircon. The letter from Ford called it manual air conditioner.

Thanks for the additional info. If your going to be asking a fair number of questions you might find it easier  to include some of that information in your signature so that you don't have to type it in with every request.  We will be asking ;)  You can look at other's postings to see how they have done it and just copy their forum. Helps allot and speeds up the help

Our standard recommendation. Please don't focus or spend allot of time on paint marks and such if you have not already corrected every other detail possible. A factory marking on an obvious aftermarket part or one finished unlike originally done is sort of a waste of time and effort and will fool very few.  At shows you normally will not get deducted for not having paint marks but will certainly get marked down for incorrect parts and details as well as incorrect markings.

Just had to put that forward for you and for others that will read this post in the future  :)

So with the information you provided I offer the following from factory build sheets and original car observations

Driveline - (front to back in order) Chartreuse, Lavender, White

Front springs - Yellow & Tan

Rear Springs - 1 Gold & 1 Brown

Please take the time to look through other threads for help on where on the items the markings were typically applied, how the part was setting during the stripe application and other details. The correct colors is only a small part of the overall detail and how it will look once finished.

There is also a fairly large article in the Library on Paint Marks with examples of the most of the colors used as well ad other help

Hope this helps

thanks for your help and comments, I will have a look at some of the posts. One of the rear springs does have a brown colour stripe near the rear springs hanger bush, any other marks are long gone with rust. 80% of the car seems to be original.
