66 Dearborn GT C4ZA-S - Leaf spring paint markings
« on: January 30, 2018, 02:31:21 PM »
Hey fellas, working on a '66 Dearborn GT convertible. What paint marks, if any, should be on the rear leaf springs?
Build date January 16th. Air, 4-speed.
    Thanks,    Pete.

What are the engineering numbers on your springs?

Think I know both just want to confirm what you have on the car  :)

As expected. The GT's that year (K and A codes) share the rear springs with one another and with Shelby's

Typically would be marked with one green and one yellow mark, short leaf, near the end of that springs on the rear end of it as installed in the car. Marking is only on that leaf. Front to rear yellow first then green was pretty typical. for your time period (since we lack any original markings) I would apply the marks with large spray daubs/dots (free hand - no masking or using Dixie cups  :)

Hey Jeff,

I know we are talking about a 66 Dearborn car, but would this be consistent for the other plants, San Jose for example, I thought they were doing hand painted stripes?

I'm literally gathering data right now for my underside rear end detailing, February 10th 1966 San Jose K-Code automatic car...

Thanks,

Jason

There IMHO was a transition period from the majority spray dots/daubs to stripes around mid year. Its not a hard change over from what I've collected. Because of this I used his dates from his springs to take into consideration when the springs were made - a better indicator than the date the car may have been built.  With that consideration I choose to offer the "earlier" method rather than the "later" version since both of yours are during the transition period from what I've collected

So for you question about a possible Feb build San Jose Mustangs with the C4ZA-S rear springs I would suggest stripes but if you have date codes we can cross reference for a better or more informed "guess"

Jeff,
Can you tell me what paint daubs or stripes would have been on my Kar and where?  A picture would be helpful.  My leaf springs are C4ZA 5556S.

Thank you!

For a car similar to yours (1966 GT, 6T09K13, Born 23 Oct 1965) I would suggest the spray dots/daubs as shown above. Looks like cars about a month-two months later started showing up with the other style of marking
