Vent Window Restoration
« on: December 13, 2017, 08:27:11 PM »
I am ready to have my vent windows rechromed. I was going to drill out the lower rivet to remove the frame and glass. My question what is everyone using to replace the factory rivet when its time to reassemble?

Semi-tubular rivets can be bought and installed the same as the ones originally used.

Google is your friend (except when they want to take over the world):

If you want to buy any/all types of hollow rivets not necessarily for the window:

I've bought from here in the past:

Also, Brown Tool has a nice rivet squeezer... a bit pricey though.

Another source https://rivetsinstock.com/
You will need a tool and dies in all instances. I made fixtures to use some of the dies in my arbor press. Sometimes it not as simple as it seems.

From a previous post (about 67-68 Grilles), there was discussion of a home-made tubular rivet tool for the grille rivets. The same idea might be adapted here too. (See reply #27 for pictures)

Another 2 questions on vent window restoration
1  Is the frame around the vent window itself chrome plated steel or stainless steel?
2  How is the glass removed from the frame and how is it reinstalled?

The frame is actually a white metal casting with chrome plating

The glass is held in by the butyle tape. It is removed by pulling or lightly prying. A glass repair shop should have the tape for reinstallation

The frame that the glass attaches to directly was stainless steel with a chrome plated pivot.

You can buy glass setting tape on ebay, there are several sizes.  I believe 1/16" is the correct thickness for the vent frame glass.  Door glass is thicker.  Just search ebay for 'glass setting tape'.
