Strange Glove Box Door Bump
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:48:34 PM »
The glove box door on my May 15, 1965 SJ fastback has this strange bump in the middle just below the latch button.  At first I thought that the previous owner somehow jammed something in the glove box that pushed out the door.  The problem with that is that there is a corresponding bump, not a depression, on the inside of the door.  I have no idea what could have caused this.  Is the door really two pieces sandwiched together or is it all one casting?  I don't know if I should leave it, or replace the door.  It appears to be the original door.  Thanks.

Does anyone know if the GT glove box door was originally two pieces assembled together, or a one piece casting?  Two pieces might explain the bump if something got in there in there during the assembly of the door.  If it's one piece then I don't know how it got there.

Doesn't look like a manufacturing defect, possibly damage?

The '65 GT glove box door was identical to the deluxe interior piece, simply sans the wood grain applique.  It was a single casting.

At first I thought it was damage.  There are no cracks on either side though.  If the door is a single casting then I have no ideas.  If it was damage then I would think that one side would be dented in.  Both the inside and outside of the door have a raised bump in the same place.

Definitely is an odd-ball.  I assume this is an original Ford part?

As far as I can tell it looks like the original door.  Since the door is a single casting could it have had an air bubble?  I bought the car from the original owner's wife.  He bought it new.  I would have thought he would have had the dealer replace it if it was there when he bought it.

Definitely an OEM door.  One of those things that you might have to replace.  Don't want to be the guy with the car that has a glove box "pimple" do you?!   :o  ;D

Thanks Charles.  I've definitely thought about replacing it.  The car is pretty much an "early" GT survivor though so I have been trying to replace only what I need to.
