Engine Tag identification
« on: October 11, 2017, 05:03:56 PM »
Could someone please explain me my engine tag? According to Bob Mannels book Mustang & Ford Small Block V8, I should have an engine number 551-B (289 D-Code with automatic). On my tag there is the number 551-C. What means the letter "N" just next to the 551-C?
Thanks for your help.
Michael

Michael,

According to this information,
http://www.fordification.com/tech/enginetagcodes_6572cars.htm
The N looks to be the month of production, (Jan. 65..?)

I can see a "4 G" as a build date, 1964, July, which would be appropriate for a "D" code. The "N" is for "engine number prefix" but a quick look at Mannel's book (Appendix A, pages 3-5) didn't specify.

According to the Mustang and Cougar tag Book by Kevin Marti, the N in the engine code prefix = Draft Tube - No PCV. (this is for 1965)
