Deluxe wheel resto/fix
« on: April 13, 2017, 02:45:09 PM »
I have one crack in my original 66' deluxe steering wheel and was looking for input on how to keep it from cracking any further. Curious to hear what others have used to restore cracks in their steering wheels or tips on how to preserve what I still have. Thanks for the input.

The cause of the crack is the material contracting with heat/cold cycles.  The only real way to minimize any further cracking is to keep the wheel out of direct sunlight/hot conditions.

There are several epoxy options out there for filling the cracks.

I actually recently restored my original wheel.

I beveled the edges with a file to give a better surface to grip and used POR15 epoxy with a coloring agent. Here's hoping it lasts well. :)

I remember that post now, very nice job. That's some good info that I will have to try to hopefully keep the crack subdued.  ;) This is on a car that I prefer driving so it will likely be in and out of the sun. 8)
