Rear bumper bracket color
« on: February 09, 2017, 10:29:04 AM »
Hi,

Can anyone please advise me what color of black the mounting bracket should be for a late '65 San Jose k-code Mustang?  Flat black or glossy???  My original ones are primed and ready for paint.

Thanks again, Steve

Semi-gloss black, maybe a little to the satin side.

Bumper guard brackets behind the rear valence on non-GT 65-66 cars.

I'm thinking of the brackets that mount inside the rear bumper...

I thought the bumper guard brackets are eventually coated body color during the painting process because they were mounted before body color was applied?? If that is the case would there be black on the back sides?? if you were looking from under the car aftwards??

I didn't think about the brackets in the bumper.  They would also be semi-gloss black with cad/zinc plated nut inserts.

The brackets behind the rear valence for the bumper guards may have had some body color over-spray speckling, but wouldn't necessarily be covered in paint.

Thanks all.  Yes, the brackets that mount to the chrome bumper.  So, semi-gloss black with cad/zinc plated nut inserts.  The ones I am repainting were actually pulled off a k-code with the bumper in 1965.  The dude had bought the car in Colorado to race in '65 so yes, the nut inserts were not painted.  Also, there is some sort of gasket or some material that goes between this bumper bracket and the body.  What should I use???

You all have been VERY helpful and thank you.  No insults like on another site I monitor.

Cheers, Steve

The sealant was strip caulk.

Thanks Charles.  I do have some of that strip caulk so that will be done.

Thanks again for the quick feedback.  Greatly appreciated.

+1  Unless the painter leaned way over and shot back towards them selves (extra effort requires) there normally isn't any noticable paint on the brackets. Do take notice (66 San Jose example below) that even if the hole in the bracket is not used for a mounting bolt the J clip was still installed .  Because these were installed (along with the rear valance) prior to painting the exposed, in the trunk, head and sealant were painted body color
