67 68 kick panel differences

I compared 67 and 68 kick panels, and note that the screw locations for the upper screws are quite different between the C7 and C8 versions.  Enjoy.

That is cool John I never noticed that. I have found a number of 68s with a pop rivet in the factory hole and the hole relocated forward. Now with your information I will have to check if those are C7 kick panels and they moved the hole to the C8 location.

I had before noticed the different locations but had never noticed it as a "67" or "68" thing, interesting to hear that (though most of my experience has been in 67's, I have often used 68 parts for various areas in the non-concours builds)

I checked out the kick panel with the rivets and it is a C7 part number. The hole was drilled in the spot that a C8 kick panel would have been. This panel is from a post strike car and it is my understanding that directly after the strike ended Ford used service parts to keep the line running. Most likely this was one of those parts. I would not expect to see one of these on a car built after the end of December 67.

I also check in to as why Ford may have relocated the holes. It seems that the 67 location is over a aria that wiring may be directly under. The may have been wire damage from a drill or screw. There is nothing under the C8 location

Thanks Marty.  I suspected that wiring interference would have been a likely reason.  The post strike explanation makes sense.  I wonder how many other cars are still out there with the riveted hole kick panels.

It might be a good idea to remember this while assembling a 67...possibly consider doing something to prevent or reduce this risk while at the same time keeping a "Concours" appearance.

Exactly.  Like an appropriate length screw, using gaffing tape or other means to keep the wires away from harm...

This is kind of thing that I really enjoy about the hobby, working together to better understand how and why things were done. This one was very rewarding because I have wondered about those rivets in the GT 350 kick panels for a couple of years.

If your car is a 67 coupe you should only have one hole at the top as shown in John's picture and drawings.

I have two (in both locations).  :o

I see where dad taped a large nut to act as a spacer for the attaching screw to go through (and not crush down the panel).

I was just looking at some pictures of a post strike unrestored 68 car that I judged in Tucson and noticed that it had the extra holes in it's kick panels too. It also had the 67 cast lower hinges too.
