Shock Tower VIN Stamp on '65

A coworker sent me this video of Detroit Speed's '65 Mustang coupe.  When they showed the engine bay, I was surprised to see that the vin number was visibly stamped on the passenger's side shock tower.  Pretty neat!

I couldn't blow it up to see if it was in fact a Ford vin of proper font etc. or the builders identifacation of some kind.I have not seen a factory stamp there before.

Looks homemade. Never seen one applied for any plant on the passenger side shock tower nor do books of the period identify that location as a legal location

Wonder if its legal in that state? - looks like it would cause some real issues if licensed in many states.

Some '65 (Early 64 1/2) Pre-Production Allen Park "Test" cars I believe had the VIN#'s stamped on the Driver's side Shock tower in the same spot....but I've never seen one on a passenger side shock tower. That would be new.  Would like to see a better pic of the VIN stamping on this one and know what the actual VIN# is - Too hard to tell..  5F07C177309 ? - If that's the actual VIN#, then I'd have to agree with Jeff as this being homemade...but I'd still like to see a much closer, better pic since it has peaked my curiosity..

Perhaps this car has been "re-bodied'? Using a title from one car and having the State Police stamp that vin to identify it on the new "body"???? Maybe along the same lines as when folks use a repro "shell" like the Dynacorns.??

I found this REAL one... It's labeled Dearborn Pilot Plant..

Updated: 11/5/2016 - I found some more info on the pic below.  It is from a Dearborn Pre-Production "Prototype" Convertible,  VIN# 5S08F100009   - And Yes, The "S" is correct for the 2nd digit in the VIN#.  Some Dearborn Prototype cars had the "S" 2nd digit in the VIN as well.  I think Bob Fria's book covers this in depth.

The video also shows a VIN in the normal location on the LH inner fender. The digit after the engine code looks like a "4" to me.

I believe the VINs jumped from 399999 to 600000 and no numbers
in between, they were reserved for Mercury's.

Might just be shadows and the angle the picture was taken. Most of the other numbers appear to be similar to the other vin on the shock tower.
