1967 Big Block Engine Color Choice (picture added)
« on: October 16, 2016, 12:41:08 PM »
Here are two pictures of Ford Dark Blue engine paint sprayed on the back of a water pump. I am about to spray my 1967 San Jose Big Block but wanted to ask if either of these colors is WAY off and should not be used? Colors can be difficult to evaluate in pictures so I took one in natural light and one in bright sun.

By the way, the darker shade is VHT Dark Ford Blue, part #SP125. The lighter shade is Dupli-Color Ford Dark Blue, part #1606.

I have searched and there are many good discussions on this, but thought I would put the two colors side-by-side for comment.
Thanks!

1606 is the better of the two in this case.

As you mentioned the computer isn't really the way to compare - too many variables

But if the colors were true on my screen to what your seeing the one on the right would be my choice if I had to use rattle can

I have used the 1606 for years but have found inconsistency in their mix, it can be quite dark. Paint mixed and sprayed from a gun is better quality if that is a option for you.

They used to offer two formulas. One was rated to 350 degrees, the other 500. The pigment was different and one was darker than the other. The new formula is a ceramic mix. It doesn't look right in my opinion.

Keith and Jeff - I appreciate your thoughts on the better color to use.

Rupp - you made an excellent observation. I felt I needed two cans to complete the job. I had to go to two separate stores that each had one can of the 1606. The difference between the two cans was almost as dramatic as the difference of the two colors in my picture! Both cans are 1606 and both say good for up to 500 degrees on the label. Luckily I read your comment and did a test spray to check colors.

I am glad it saved you the trouble, I had one sprayed on and the next one was the wrong color. I had to go search for a new can matching the first can.

Plastikote 224 is another option in a rattle can.

I like 224 for small blocks when I have to use a rattle can. Always found it a bit off for big blocks. Have used a Duplicolor product in those cases  but its been a long time since I did had to do that. Just my observations
