it has been my observation recently (NJ plant only) that A code GT's in the 66 build year have the extra metal plate in place as per previous pictures supplied, but A code non GT's do not have this plate......

There must be a reason why but I don't have that answer

In continuing the discussion... it looks original to me.  I assume this is an A code GT car?  Since A code 65-66 GT's share the same rear build up as a K code, the snubber plates are the same.  Maybe this reinforcement was a way to strengthen the bumper area.  K codes typically do not have a bumper attached there, but 8" rear cars do.
Interesting thread...that's the same snubber setup as my Metuchen K GT. I know conventional thinking is that 9" cars had the rubber mounted to the bracket on the pinion but seems Metuchen may have built up a GT rear regardless of A or K engine?
