67 NJ Front Shock Upper Mounting Bracket Finish
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:31:29 AM »
Trying to find the answer to this question, but getting lost in the search...1967 NJ built ,(actual build date of Nov. 66'), I am trying to determine if the shock mounts  on top of the shock towers were painted black or left bare metal. I have seen them black in a prior search of an unrestored 67' NJ convertible but want the second opinion. I have seen them bare metal on 68's so looking for confirmation. I am in the process of changing out the KYB shocks on my coupe for originals and while at it, want the shock mounts to be correct. Thanks for any feedback.

(BTW I searched "unrestored 1967" but only found the one pic from an ebay auction of an unrestored survivor..   :(

Looked through my collection of pictures - threw out cars that appeared to have had a rattle can restoration of the engine compartment and I still came up without a clean cut answer. Best guess at this point would be that they may have started out black and changed the finish to P&O  later in production

7T01T1310x - Looks to be the same finish as the shock tower support

7T01T13101x - Looks to be the same finish as the shock tower support

7T01C1490xx - Painted over ?

7T03A15238x - Phosphate & Oil

7T01T150x - Black

7T01C1917xx - Rust - not like shock towers - Phosphate and Oil ??

7T03T2225x - ?

7T02K2604x - From a show. May have been redone though car was presented as unrestored

NOTE: Will split these two posts off into a new thread for others later

IMHO the Dearborn and Metuchen shock caps were phosphate and oil and San Jose were painted black.

My car's unit number is 149,XXX Looks like I might be safe leaving it black. It was definitely black before I media blasted the front end. Considering the second owner, (who had the car from 1970 till when we bought it in 1980 and didn't take good care of the vehicle), I'm pretty sure he didn't put any effort into touching up the engine compartment. I see from your photos another vin at 150,XXX that is black which is a relief. ;)
I also have heard there were many rolling changes during the 67' model year, especially in the beginning, is that true??
