1969 Exterior Decor Group
« on: April 22, 2016, 03:26:52 PM »
1969 Fastback
Dearborn built December 1968

What did the "Exterior Decor Group" consist of for a 1969 Fastback?  I find information that states rocker moldings, wheel lip moldings, and rear end trim.
What is "rear end trim" on a fastback?
The build tag on the car shows the following options:
EXT
PB
RM
The Marti Report lists the following options:
3spd trans
Electric Clock
White Sidewall Tires 4 ply tires
Power front disc brakes
Exterior decor group
Heavy duty suspension

The Marti Report and the build tag don't seem to have the same option list.
Were not all options listed on the build tag?

Start with the easy one

No the buck tag was not a list of options. It was a list, to the workers in the body section of the build, of the items that they needed to be aware of. This would include (in some cases) different body panels or brackets that would be needed to be welded to the unibody. Holes drilled or other preparatory steps for those option.

It also included things like where the body started "life"  at some plants (welding station) and paint colors for interior and exterior.

Hope this helps that part of thew question

Thanks Jeff.  I understand the purpose of a buck tag better now.

Any more info on remaining ?'s

"Exterior Decor Group" items?

What are the codes on the buck tag?

EXT = ? Exterior Decor Group??
PB = power disc brakes
RM = rocker moldings or race mirrors?

If EXT is the Exterior Decor Group then I would assume RM would be race mirrors as rocker moldings would be redundant.?

RM can be rocker moldings or racing mirrors depending on the plant. Which plant(s) I don't know.
Marti Auto also has a great buck tag decoding book available.
My car is San Jose so I don't have a buck tag.
Regarding the exterior decor group, from the 69 Mustang brochure:

PB = power disc brakes
RM = rocker moldings or race mirrors?

Coding can get confusing since it differed from year to year and plant to plant - even changed during the year according to the manager I talked to about the coding. He was the guy that choose the codes and issued the changes/updates

According to Kevin Marti's The Mustang and Cougar Tagbook research (if you have the book you'll notice some of the members here are listed in the "credits" :)

RM = Rocker moldings (the "Race Mirrors" used RAC
EXT = Exterior Decor Trim
PB = Power Brakes - though at the moment not sure what change to the body was necessary for that option

Will look to see if I can find anything on the one remaining part of the original question

Is the punch-out in the cowl a little larger on power brakes?

Now reflecting I think it night be the provision for the upper drivers side mounting hole and cage nut (for lack of a better term at the moment  ::) for the booster.

There's an extra hole for the power brake booster.

My Marti Lists the Power Front Disc Brakes as an option and the Marti Buck Tag is stamped PB as well.  The bolt hole, high and right, in the picture has no captured nut but the pedal support does.  Brian

So if EXT is exterior decor and that package included the rocker moldings the why also stamp RM?  That is redundant.  I guess they wanted to be sure the holes were drilled!

Well do you have racing mirrors or not?
If so, then your plant id's them as RM.
If not, mystery to me since the exterior decor group includes rocker moldings.

?? That would not match what has been found on other Mustangs built at that plant and year. Always could have been added later if there. Unlike the Buck Tag Information Exchange that we did in the 90's believe Kevin matched the codes to the Ford information and came up with the codes using that route.  I've never seen an original racing mirror car with only the RM on the buck tag on a 69 Dearborn car.

Of course if the OP had a copy of the buildsheet that would likely support the coding also.

The rocker molding could be explained by the fact that it was used/installed on other packages also that year and plant and those workers were trained to look for a particular code rather than having to remember the three or so codes that would also trigger the same need. Of course we don't have to truly understand just that it is there and what it relates to :)
