67 a/c compressor York
« on: March 27, 2016, 02:24:29 PM »
As I'm trying to get my A/C working for the first time I realized it has a aluminum housing and as stated in other threads this usually means a rebuilt or replaced part. So this is the tag that came with the car and compressor does the Y in the number denote a York was used originally ?

If I understand the question correctly the Y just is part of the York numbering system and is not related to what was used originally on any car. Just a tracking number internally in their system for many purposes

Not really. York and Tecumseh were both used. I am guessing more of a plant thing . York were used a lot at SJ in 67 and 68 more the the cast iron Tecumseh . Same with  Metuchen . It seems that Dearborn used more cast iron Tecumseh then York.Just what I have seen.

Would the tag on this compressor  be consistant with a assembly line part ? In asking if this could be a assembly line part  my thoughts would be,  would it be finished without paint ?

I would think so for a 67 but not a 68.

Not for any of your listed applications IMHO

It would be black on the assemblyline. the 67/68 Shelby's which used a special York compressor were ether bare aluminum or painted silver. you might be confused with those.

Jeff, do you know what the 3 digit number is for at the bottom of the tag (047).

Only a guess (would like a few dozen to compare and see if the guess is solid) but possibly the date the pump was assembled. Appears that the following year they incorporated a letter in the code

Typically the bottom line on a York data plate indicate the month and the year of manufacture,  in your case April, of  1967. That is according to information on ID for York compressors.

If you need a tag ,call R+A Motorsports 816 246 9094 . Ask for Jeff or Noel . They made up some excellent reproductions and can stamp them with what you want on it. You will need the information to give them as if they have to research it for you they will most likely charge shop rate. Tell them I recommended them as they typically don't do these service unless they are restoring a car for the owner.

Thanks Bob but  the car this is from was built April 28 67, so the tag does fit the car. There is also a date code wheel on the compressor from what I could read there was a 6 in the center and  dots in the wedges about half way around.  :)
