Does the original steering box on a '66 GT with manual steering need to be replaced in order to convert to power steering?

Mechanically they are the same. The difference is in the "preload". It's covered in the service manual. If it's a do-it-yourself project I don't know.

I would classify it as a DIY task.  The only not so common tool is a torque wrench that measures well in the 6-10 inch-pound range.  I found that a beam style is what is needed.  There are 0-60 in-lb beam styles available for about $30.  Seems to me that a 3/4" or 11/16" 12 point socket fit over the shaft, so you need adapters to convert from the 1/4" drive up to 3/8" or 1/2" matching the socket.

Good instructions on http://www.stangerssite.com/adjustment.html
