switch to transverse muffler
« on: January 03, 2016, 12:23:05 PM »
What was the reason, assuming there was one, the transverse muffler was factory installed starting in '67, vs. '66?

Likely was a cost issue (just a guess)  and sure there was an engineer or two mixed in there somewhere.

Continued that way (well prettye much) for many models through 1969

yeah I often wondered why ford used that crossflow muffler just in front of the gas tank heating up the fuel & crossing the pipes verses 70 much improved straight thru system saving alignment time & 4 less clamps on assembly line.

It is odd since the Boss and CJ Cougars had true dual exhaust 1968-1970.
There is about 3.00" of additional length in the rear floor but the basic 2.25" design was already in play with the Merc when the 68.5 cars were introduced.

69 Boss 302 Cougars didn't use the transverse muffler system like the Mustang? Interesting - another mystery
