I'm SHAKERing my head and laughing at my "luck"
« on: January 17, 2016, 06:14:35 PM »
Way back in the late 70s I asked the junk-yard owner: "How much for that air-cleaner on top of that car?"...........The SHAKER was simply parked on the roof of a 67-68 Mustang.  Didn't even dicker on his price. $10.00 was how much I paid for my first and only SHAKER, the only one I ever saw in junk yard, let alone bought from a junk-yard. Turned out it was a 351W SHAKER Assembly, Every indication when I stripped it down was the original paint on its scoop inside & out was white ....I have always presumed a 351W black car with white lettering/stripes and scoop..
Decades later I bought a SHAKER scoop, seal and mid-plate from the classifieds of an FE forum.
Today I finally put the two midplates side-by-side...... D'oh!.... Turns out I ended up with two 351 Midplates both with the 2V and 4V markings and unique holes.  The second midplate is drilled for a CJ...--- The forum seller stated it came off a CJ!
My laughing to myself is about the odds of getting two small-block SHAKERS?
I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me if small block and big block  midplates are the same dimensionally other than the mounting holes?  ..............................

Good question and a lot of mystery when it comes to the different shaker setups.  My early 69 428 mid-plate is 17 & 9/16" wide and 18 & 7/8 Long.  You might post the dimensions of your stuff ?  Getting some of this information on the record might be a good idea.  Brian

Very interesting, these pics should speak for themselves. Dimensionally I believe the mid-plate is the same as the 428CJ. This Mid-Plate is from a 1969 351 Windsor. The 351W's Filter Housing is more refined in that it has an actual flange w/studs to mount the mid-plate.

I'm adding a picture of the 351W base just to show it:

   WOW!

Did a lot of web-surfing and found SEMO Mustang really has a lot of SHAKER's and parts. They offer a 1970 Shaker Intermediate Plate, Concours  Model Number: D0ZZ-9600-CC
Concours Quality, USA Made Shaker Intermediate Plate correct for 1970 Mustang. All correct details for 1970 including dual 2V/4V front holes, new vacuum motor, flapper door and rod. Comes completely painted and ready to install.

From that description I gather ALL 1970 Intermediate Plates are the same -- Best I can figure!  So my questioning 351W vs CJ midplate dimensions is moot -- there both the same part...

Not sure that we need the whole ad reposted.

Not sure if that wording suggests they were originally all the same - just that the part they sell will work/fit on multiple applications. In general we all know that "Concours correct" does not always really mean that - IMHO a way overused term  ::)  So check and confirm details - all the time

Just a few shaker  comments,
The shaker midplates are all the same, except for the holes that mount them to the base. 1970 midplates have the 2V/4V stamping and 2 holes at the front, and slots on the sides instead of holes. Some feel that even the 70 CJ cars got the 2V-4V top, but I know of 3 70CJ cars that have a single hole top that are almost certainly original to the car.

The shaker bases are all unique between year and application, so you really have to do your homework. Some are really rare (69 390) and some are really valuable (Boss 302)

BTW BB, your base shown is a Boss 302, not a 351W

Hope this helps, John
