« on: December 10, 2015, 12:44:10 PM »
Hello everyone! does anyone have a link to maybe a guide that helps you to know what and where the factory markings were on the underbody of a 68 mustang fastback? it doesn't have to be exactly correct, im not competing, i just want the markings on there for car shows.\\

thanks!

what kind of shows are you planning to attending as you say you are not competing? information around here is related to what is found to be factory correct for that particular car during that particular time frame. as has been stated on previous threads make sure all of your other details are correct before concerning yourself with markings. if you place markings on your car there is almost surely someone out there who will copy them without verifying that they are 100% correct. you don't want to be 'that' guy.

+1

As mentioned many times before the markings do you no good at a show (most classes) - they are or could be just distractions from the important details.

If it "doesn't have to be correct"   make something up or write you name on the floor pan in a somewhat hidden spot that you can show your friend.

As for correct markings start with the coding found on your car's buildsheet

Some examples of others who just made up stuff and slapped it on their car. Not trying to pick on any owner or restorer (didn't mention or label pictures so it could be determined) just for educational purposes and to help others.

OTHERS DO NOT COPY THESE  :)

i just meant i won't be competing in contests with judges, i just always thought it was cool how people put back the factory markings. I didn't mean to insult anyone when i said "doesn't have to be accurate". Im just looking for some general knowledge.

Thanks for the replies anyways

No problem its (as you can guess now) just that we see allot of marks that don't belong on specific cars applied there only to have others copy and repeat the process.

You didn't tell us anything about your car - when (you posted the where) it was built as well as how it was originally equipped (engine size, transmission, PS or non-PS, AC or non-AC.....). All play a part in determining these details.

I would guess you have already searched through earlier posted information and pictures here on the site from those who own a car like yours

As mentioned, your car's buildsheet is the first and best place to find the general - typical marks specific for your car. We can only share general information since your car may have had some markings that were only applied to your car in that specific way or location. That's why it's important to document the car as it comes apart for the first time - so they can be reproduced.

Do you have the buildsheet? We can help you decode the information on it to usable paint marks after we discuss and share how they were typically applied. Buildsheet only shows colors - a small part of the total.   But its a great start

i don't have a build sheet for the car unfortunately. It is a 1968 mustang fastback built in dearborn on February 2nd 1968. 289 C code, 3 speed trans, no AC, non-power steering, non-power brakes, wimbledone white, 2.79 rear axle and at dealer #56F506

Well that is a start unfortunately in checking what buildsheets I have copies of I could not find a 3 speed 68 fastback with a C or J code but looking at others I have and cross referencing I can at least offer the following

Front and rear shocks were likely marked with red
Driveline was marked - Lavender, Dark Green & Light Green

On both of these you should be able to find examples on this site showing how (placement, style and look) these items were originally marked with those colors.

Believe there are some rears end pictures also but you would need to compare the details (date, ratio and style) of those cars with yours
