Casting numbers aren't much help on a FE engine but I think it should have an "A" scratch on the rear bulkhead.

Would it also have C6AE-B or C6ME-A castings on the block

Only have record of a couple from that time period and they are -A

Of course there are another 3-4 other engine sizes that will have the same markings :(

Since you report its a 428 PI you've already doe the scratch letter test and measured the bores as well.

IMHO can't really trust everything you see on the outside (castings) of a FE block. Ford choose to reuse the exteriors from other engines when making these things so you might (for example) find the back casting the same as a 427 side oiler and the sides from a 352  while the front is from another earlier engine.  Without opening it up an checking other things you could be purchasing a truck block or passenger.

Tread carefully

On my original 428 block, you can only see a straight line scratch, it's not a complete A and the block casting is a C6ME, not C6ME-A. There are no vin numbers on the block. The original heads are a C7AE-A.
