Heat shields over motor mounts or not?
« on: February 12, 2015, 10:02:11 AM »
Hi,
On my -64 April 260 I know that there should be steel heat shields between the block and motor mounts.

I also have a late November -66 with 289/C4. Should the heat shields (none there today) be present in this setup also regardless of type of motor mount?

thanks,
Claes

I've seen the heat shields on late 1966 V8 Mustangs.

Will see if the pictures turn up. As a somewhat related note - some of the other later small blocks used a single heat shield on the passenger side motor mount only

I just recently started a resto on a unrestored 66 NJ (april) convertible and there is/was only one heat shield on the passenger side.  got me thinking!!!!!

During the restoration of my late July 1965 projected build date Metuchen car I found heat shields on both the driver and the passenger side motor mounts.

I have mostly seen a single one used on passenger side (LHD), but have also seen cars with it used on both.  If I was judging a car, I would accept either config.

Does the assembly manual have anything on this?

I've also seen the heat shields on one or both sides. If only on one side it will be the left as that is the torque side and will weaken before the right side.

Passenger side (where we're finding the single installations and where Ford installed them on the Boss for example) would be the compression side - the reason the old racers would fab a limiting rod or cable on the drivers side since that is the side that would normally go first.

Maybe the same idea but we're using different terms :)

Were these shields natural or block color?
My unrestored engine had no shields at all Dec 65 build.

Does the assembly manual have anything on this?
It says 2 required, 6C038 in the 64 Assembly manual and in the MPC sect 60.4 pg 5 as C3DZ-6C038-A thru 1968 for 260/289 (ex HP).
This is one of those often left off or forgotten parts. On a 66 GT Fastback I had, there was only one, so I had the machine shop make a couple dozen for me. They used electro-galvanized steel, what was on hand and not allocated to a contract.
