Topic: exhaust pipe connections

I'm installing a system on a '66 gt...the pipes don't have slits in the ends where they connect(except the tips), so  I don't have the confidence they will seal together completely.  Some systems do come with slits so the clamp has some room to actually tighten the pipes together.  I'm thinking of cutting parallel slits in the ends of the outer pipes to allow the clamps to tighten securely...similar to those in the exhaust tips.  Any one tried this and been either happy or not with the results?

The factory installed exhaust would have been welded on each side of the muffler connections.  There would only be 2 clamps per side, one at the H pipe and one for the exhaust tip.

The way I saw it done was complicated but it worked. The factory installed the exhaust before the rear axle and springs were installed but with the engine and transmission in place. What was done to replicate this was the aftermarket exhaust was "fitted" with the rear axle in place for clearance purposes, marked with chalk and felt tip pen, and then removed, along with the axle. The exhaust pipes and mufflers were trimmed then welded to make two complete subassemblies, then installed. The rear axle was then reinstalled. It took a day and a half due to some fitting problems of the forward pipes to the muffler. Fortunately all the pipes were too long, a lot better than the other way.

Is the system your installing a aftermarket version from one of the vendors which can be  multiple sections for shipping.  Scott Fullers and factory Ford was one piece. This difference may explain your dilemma . If it is not a factory system it needs to be welded before and after the mufflers. The factory system is already welded there.

Yes it is an aftermarket...I've used this system before and it installed OK without any leaks, but I believe I used sealer at all the connections.  I thought I'd try the "slits" this time and see how it seals up.

Why would you rather clamp it instead of choosing to weld it at the mufflers?

Agree with Bob, if you clamp down the pipes with a regular exhaust clamp, they most likely aren't coming apart again anyway.  Pipes can be welded with the exhaust attached to the car, done it many times.
