backup light fastners
« on: April 28, 2015, 12:26:20 PM »
Good morning guys, I am trying to find out what the correct finish is for the nuts holding the backup lights to the valance. I have several original lights but  I can't tell if they were plated or phosphate and oil. Also 2 of the nuts had small red rubber washers inside the nuts. Was this a normal practice? I am going to use repro backup lights for now but the nuts are smaller than original. Thanks for all answers.

In the library section you will find a topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet 69-70" that has two spreadsheet files, one sorted by part number (MHW69-70HW01.xls) and the other by application, MHW69-70AP01.xls which is the one you want. Scroll down to "backup light housing-body" and the answer is there. When you say the repro nuts are smaller, what do you mean? Thread, drive or flange.

The repro nuts have the same size threads but everything else is different. Please excuse the blurred pic, but you can see the repro on left vs original in the center and the red rubber washers on rt. the repro has a serrated washer where the original is smooth. I'll try to get a better pic later. Also I didn't find which finish 36 is. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Thanks for all your help.

The link to the spreadsheet give the dimensions of the nuts. Finish -S36 is gold zinc. Get a set of the Mustang Assembly Manuals for your year car and the AMK Guide to Ford Fasteners. They explain most of what you need.

Zinc dichromate is the correct finish on these...all the originals I have seen here have that finish.  Im not aware of an accurate source except using the originals and replating them.

Thanks Marcus, I have had the original nuts I have soaking in evaporust for a week hoping they would clean up ok where I could see the finish. They aren't as good as I would like and I couldn't make out any gold zinc finish at all. They look almost natural so I suppose the plating is completely gone. Thanks again

if they have any type of slight pitting on them, and you take them to be re-plated, you may want to throw some T9 oil over them to protect the rough finish from going to rust. Just a personal experience I had.

AMK carries the "raw" parts, 359972-S8 as B-11232, these are clear zinc, the book says gold zinc; 359060-S8 as B-12955, these are also clear zinc and the sealer may have to be removed (known as 353911-S8 with a sealer). All eight parts will have to be replated gold zinc, but you start with new hardware.

I will post a picture of the originals tomorrow to make sure we are looking at and talking about the same thing.

Here is a picture of the original fasteners.  These are the assembly line originals.  These have been cleaned up and would need to be plated zinc dichromate to make them look new again.  Hard to find these without pitting even out here in Arizona.  Alot of dirt and grime in those areas.
