Variation on Standard '69 Horn?
« on: September 23, 2014, 10:15:03 AM »
I was looking at '69 engine bay pictures on eBay, and I ran across this photo from a '69 Grande (disregard the red circles, I put those in for another thread I was asking about).  I noticed that the driver's side horn is mounted differently than most I've seen, including my car.

The only thing I could come up with was that this was intended to space the horn further away to clear the condenser/drier setup.  Is that the case?  My car is a factory A/C car, but the original horns were long gone when I got the car.  Did this horn setup require any modification to the core support itself?

The eBay ad didn't give a VIN number, so I'm not sure when or where the car pictured was originally built.  My car is a Metuchen-built '69, built on June 5th, 1969.

Too much junk, too little time.

Yes,the piece of contoured metal was used to space out the horn bracket from the condenser. 69/70 A/C part only. No other mod to the radiator support other then the punch out for the condenser lines.

Thanks, Bob!  It looks like I could make that spacer piece from a piece of scrap metal.  Do you know if the bottom of the piece is contoured to match the core support, or only the top?  I can see where the top of the spacer is meant to wrap around the core support, but I'm not sure about the bottom.

Yes you could make something to work but most likely it will not look like the original. They are like 20.00 used on eBay. No repro I am aware of.

Great, thanks.  Good to know they're out there used--it'll save time not having to make one.

Thanks Harry, I found one on eBay before I saw your post.

Marcus, I had a saved copy of your horn article, and I didn't even think to look at it!   :-[  :D

I recently had to locate one of these spacers for my April Dearborn GT350. I had a hard time finding one and I don't even remember if mine had one since I disassembled mine several years ago. My question is: did all  69/70 A/C mustangs have the spacer? I tried to find pictures of cars with one but most of the pictures I found didn't have one, even the GT350 that Jeff restored in '09. Is this an early/late thing, or did a lot of them just get lost? I'm just curious about this. Thanks  TOB

It should be on all 69/70 A/C equipped cars IMO. Necessary because of condenser bracket interference. I think that there is even a repro part available but can't remember where I saw it. I think maybe NPD.

Checked the pictures and found them on early and late cars (just checking)  - Agree with Bob that they should be there for all. In my pictures of the assembly believe it was added after that shots (front end wasn't even on at that point). Looks like its there on the finished pictures though they aren't close enough to see it clearly. Judges never mentioned it not being there :)

I have a high confidence level that it was there the time I judge it at the Washington MCA show.  I think I would have caught that if it wasn't.

I appreciate the offer but I have already found one and have it ready to install.  I just found it interesting so many seem to be missing them and didn't know if the 70 horns might have been different or the owners maybe 'adjusted' them. ;D Thanks for all the answers.  TOB
