Topic: 69' Mach 1 Trunk Deck

My 69' Mach 1 had it's original trunk deck lid.  They did a horrible hack job to install a 70' style spoiler.  I had a repro deck but it is a 70' style with the cutouts for the spoiler brackets.  I have repaired the hack job and I had to replace the back skin and frame,  the repro was also 3/16" narrower than the factory.  I saved most of the original and am keeping the original paint and decals, the jack instructions are quite rough as someone(why do people do thee things?) rattle canned the trunk with black paint.  Reducer removed most but the decal is bad   but original.  I even found the black decal wrapped around the lips on each side.  It had a terrible white paint job, over blue, over some awful gold.  I am glad they did a terrible job because I found original stripes and can locate them exactly where they were from the factory.  OK  my question.   What are the two 'X''s on the frame of the deck lid?

Sorry.  I am thinking maybe it is an indicator of where to drill for a luggage rack.  They are about where the bolts attach the hinges to the lid, but on the other side.  The third picture shows the proximity.

Don't recall seeing those on all sportroof trunk lis but will look when I have some around. You can find these x's on different sheet metal pieces - So have thought them to be indicators for where spotwelds were meant to be placed but no real proof of that yet to my knowledge. Doesn't make sense for them to be weld points in this example. You find them every so often on different panels

Thanks for the info.   I hadn't noticed them until I wiped it down trying to remove the rattle can black.

Is your trunk lid a Cleveland stamping plant piece?

I am not sure on the way to determine that.  It was built at Metuchen in Oct 68'.  I will get the stampings when I get out there tonight and post the pics.

Don't think its a spoiler thing since they were both used the same ones as far as we currently know.

Since they are both from the same stamping plant might be a time period thing - like the hood variations

Brain do you have a 70 or 69 spoiler? Just noticed the 70 brackets

Brian I think I see an X! The spoiler for a 70' as I understand uses the brackets and the 69' spoilers are vary rare especially the mount bolts.

Jeff the stands are DOZB/FoMoCo/TEACO with the DOWB/FOMOCO pads .  My current thinking is that this spoiler is an over the counter service part.  The wing seems to be glass and the next time it's off the car I will weigh it.
