Late Dearborn built 69 with blue undercarriage
« on: February 23, 2015, 12:27:15 AM »
There is a Dearborn built June 1969 Mach 1  on E bay with the blue undercarriage paint. I know we have seen a few of the early cars like October of 68 but this is the latest one I have seen. It looks like the coverage was pretty thorough too. I guess it would be safe to say that any Dearborn built 69 could have this color since we have documented very early and very late production cars from that plant. I have uploaded some photos for your collection Jeff.

Thanks Chris

I've found that most of the floor sections of the 69 Dearborns were batch colors rather than red oxide that was used during shorter periods.

Since its a late car was the front frame (firewall forward) batch also?

Thanks again - especially for including all the documenting information

Jeff,
My cougar is a June 3 Dearborn build that also has the Blue batch paint on the undercarriage as well as the front frame section. I also believe the the area under the cowl was painted the same batch color. Please note the color of the paint under the gaskets that were temporarily placed on the cowl section and were painted the body color. I am trying to replicate the same as what we found but don't understand how the area under the gaskets could be blue/black unless it was painted the same batch color and not red oxide. Please let me know your opinion.
thanks,
Brian

Sorry - "Under the cowl"??

The usage of batch color forward of the firewall is often documented on late 69 Dearborn cars- up onto the inner fender panels and shock tower pocket as a base - before the other colors were applied.

Please note the color of the paint under the gaskets that were temporarily placed on the cowl section and were painted the body color. I am trying to replicate the same as what we found but don't understand how the area under the gaskets could be blue/black unless it was painted the same batch color and not red oxide. Not gaskets but the window adjustment plates from the door jambs (two or four depending on body style)   Since the color would be black maybe this is just color from the interior black out before the body color was applied I've noticed darker colors on this area also in the shadows. Will check to see which plants and time to see if its still there on red oxide undercarriage cars

Guess I should polish through the layers on a few original examples next time I've got access to a couple to see what a layer by layer removal will show us

I wonder if "blue " is the best description of the color . The color I am perceiving in my monitor of the picture posted is a blueish gray. The same blueish gray is a fairly common variant look of the Dearborn batch paint. The typical batch paint seems to include gray to some extent regardless of what end of the spectrum it is. I have seen distinct maroon and other nno gray included colors . I haven't seen a distinct blue /blue color yet but wouldn't be to surprised if I did.I am not trying to mince words but just thought if it is a blue gray variant that it would be important to maybe distinguish it as such so as to give those reading or that have never seen it the best idea of what it looks like. Thanks for the pictures.

I have seen metallic looking paint on 69 Dearborn spring built cars & remember when the grabber colors came out & older paint colors were dropped the batch paint would also change depending on what paint ford wanted touse up at the time. so their is no exact color of batch paint.
