1967 Mustang Smog Pump Question
« on: February 14, 2015, 12:47:49 PM »
I have a question on a 1967 Mustang 390 GTA Dec 1966 build Smog Pump.
1 - What does CFB 1 stand for?
2 - What color is the back plate supposed to be?
3 - how do I tell if I have the correct pump for a 390? (Its stamped July 1966)

Thanks for your help,
Travis

I have a question on a 1967 Mustang 390 GTA Dec 1966 build Smog Pump.
1 - What does CFB 1 stand for?

Where did you find it on the pump?  Stamped or cast?

If stamped I would venture that it's a rebuilders ID stamp

2 - What color is the back plate supposed to be?

Semi-gloss black with bare metal machined surfaces

3 - how do I tell if I have the correct pump for a 390? (Its stamped July 1966)

Pumps can be converted to different uses/applications a complete ready to use 67 390 will have three attachment points on the rear plate, the correct size pulley on the front and the specific valve on the side. Believe no shield or diverter on the valve for your application

Thank you, the date code was cast into it and I found it on eBay.He Said he rebuilds them for a living. I still need to do some work on it. It does have the three ports on the back. Do you know where I can get a new side valve.

Thanks again,
Travis

Found the CBF 1 you mentioned when I pulled up some pictures from my collection. Cast into the front surface by the casting date . You mentioned that you were looking at a stamped date so I'm guessing you were not referring to the casting date that is on the face also of the early style pumps

"CBF 1" I believe has something to do with the supplier. May/most of the Thermactor parts were not made by Ford but by suppliers and sub contractors like allot of each car

Never have had a need for a pump valve.  Guess I would start by finding one of the places that rebuilds them, likely available since some of the parts houses have been altering late model pumps by drilling holes in the cases and adding them, only to sell them on Ebay aas originals. Sometimes   ::)
