Hardware Questions
« on: February 06, 2015, 08:58:22 PM »
Hi All:

I have a 1965 Dearborn fastback that I am going to do a restoration on, and am having a little trouble identifying some of the hardware used on the front bumper / valance assemblies.

The three part numbers I am having trouble identifying are part numbers: 17841, 374358-S, and 37483-S. All three parts have asterisks by them in the diagram, but I am not sure what that signifies.

Any ideas what these parts are, and if there are equivalents available? Also, is anyone aware of any reference books that might include descriptions of the hardware used on a 65?

Thanks!

The Mustang 1964 1/2 - 1973 Restoration Guide by Tom Corcoran and Earl Davis is loaded with parts diagrams, part numbers, charts and a few pictures but only has a few close ups of specific parts.  I have found this publication useful but as with every publication, I would not treat it as gospel.  It's a reference.  A good starting point in your quest to gather information.  I have used my copy often and have found it helpful.  On page 34 it has a parts diagram containing the parts you speak of.  Here is what I can see from my copy of the book...

17841 - Looks like a threaded sleeve that fastens the front bumper brackets to the frame rails
374358-S - Nut that fastens the front bumper to the front bumper bracket
37483-S - Washer for front bumper side bracket

I would also reference AMK as well as they carry a lot of the fasteners for Mustangs in the original finish.

- 1965 Dearborn fastback -
The three part numbers I am having trouble identifying are part numbers:
17841
Looking at the 1965 Mustang Body Assembly manual, page 8, the full part number is C4ZB-17841 and is defined as a sleeve. It appears to be used to partially align the inner and outer bumper arms. I thought it was part of the inner arm. Best I can say for now.
374358-S
The is a 7/16-14 Stover lock hex nut clear zinc plated (-S8). It is not reproduced. It was used on 1964-65 front bumpers (although my 66 San Jose Oct 65 build Fastback had them) and 64-66 rear bumpers. Those are your sources.
37483-S

This is an error, the part number is 34783-S7 a 7/16 lock washer of the trapezoid design (the cross section is tapered with the thickness of the inside diameter thicker than the outside). It is not reproduced. It has multiple applications from 64 to 73.
If you go to the Library Section of this forum, you will find a topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet" that has over 9300 entries in part number order.
