Would anyone happen to know the exact date that Ford stopped producing the 427 and started the 428cj?

This is an excerpt from the Mercury Cougar GT-E registry.

While it is true that all 357 1968 Cougars built with the 427 were GT-Es, it is also true that 37 additional GT-Es were built with 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air engines. The switch to the 428 for regular production came in May, 1968 and the last known produced 427 has a scheduled production date of June, 1968. Because the GT-E was a mid-model year introduction with scheduled production dates beginning in January, 1968.

The W code 427-4V engine was found in prototype Cougars with a door tag date of 04G, or July 4, 1967. There was an overlap, where the 427 engine was still produced when the R code 428CJ engines were avaliable in 1968. After April 1968?

The reason for the question is because I have a set of heads (C8AE-6090-J), water pump, exhaust manifolds, and distributor that are all dated late August 1967 that were on a 70 428SCJ that I have. Can't figure out if they are late 67 Cougar 427 or early 428?

I'd bet that they were GTE cougar heads, as CJ mustang production didn't start till the end of December. How many bolts holes do they have on the exhaust face of the head, and what exhaust manifolds do you have ? I've never seen CJ manifolds that early (except possibly XE numbered manifolds). Regardless, you have some pretty rare parts.....

sportyworty (Kerry W. ) would be the guy to talk to about early CJ stuff, He's a member here and on the 428CJ forum

Pretty sure that the first 50 R code 1968-1/2 Mustangs used that cylinder head. Date probably indicates that your cylinder heads came from a early 1968 GT-E though. Sportyworty can confirm.

An August 1967 casting would be for a 1968, 1968 production began late July / August 1968.

W code or 427-4V Mercury Cougar GT-E's used, 390 exhaust manifolds, Holley list 4088 carburetor with an approximate 600cfm.
Back in the day, owners added 428CJ Holley carburetors and CJ exhaust manifolds or headers.

Casting numbers from exhaust manifolds?

Can you see if there is a VIN stamp on the end of one of those cylinder heads? I found a VIN number off of a set of those -J heads and it was one of the missing GT-E's. We are actively tracking down any leads for the GT-E Cougars for the GT-E registry, some of you may know Jim Pinkerton?

These are 390 manifolds, sounds like this stuff is from GTE cougar, nice find....

I think I talked to Jim last year about a 68 427 GTE Cougar at Hart Taylor Motors in Spencerport NY around May of 68. My Dad used to work there and my folks were in closing the deal on a 68 Colony Park Wagon. I was looking around the show room and they had a 427 GTE setting on the floor. I popped the hood and it had a chrome air cleaner the said 427 High Performance Premium Fuel. It was one beautiful car. Had a rare Moon roof option which was open when I sat in the drivers seat. I was only 17 at the time and dreamed for months as to how could I afford such a car. I kept dreamin.

I can't find any VIN numbers at all. One head has an (A) and the other has an (A) and a (C). I do appreciate the help! If anyone is interested, I will be looking to sell or trade these parts to help finish my R-code?
- Heads , both are 7H26 will come with the manifolds

A friends shop was restoring a early KR and to my surprise and that of the shop owner the driver side head was a 427 low riser and the other side was a CJ . Heads looked virtually identical when we compared . Most likely Ford was using up unused stock. The driver head had the KR VIN # on it so we know it was original to the car. Just a interesting note.
