65 Alternator amps ?

    Which is the correct Alternator ?   Can't seem to find this w/search so...  The car; May of 65 San Jose GT w/radio and no AC or other extra's.  C5AF-10300-A 38 Amps or C5AF-10300-D 42 Amps ?  Thanks,  Brian

I believe that 1965 A and K code Mustangs (GT or not) came with a 42 Amp Alternator with or without air conditioning.  Here is some info from deadnutson.com that may be helpful:

C5DF-10300-A 1965 200/289 with or w/o PS (38Amp, Single pulley)
C5AF-10300-B 1965 AC 200, AC 289 + PS (42Amp, Single pulley)
C5AF-10300-C 1965 AC 289 w/o PS (42Amp, Double pulley)
C5AF-10300-D 1965 289 High Performance (42Amp, Single pulley 3.87")
C5TF-10300-F 1965 AC 390+PS, 427 Cobra (55Amp, Single pulley)
65 Dearborn Built Fastback
Approximate Build Date, September 2, 1964
289 4V, C4, PS, PB, No A/C

     Thank you Mark.  So 42 amp it is.  The description for the 42 Amp. ' D ' version calls for a  3.87 pulley.  The pulley on my car/alternator is more like 2 & 7/8".  Is the larger pulley for the ' K ' code and the smaller for the ' A ' code ?  Thanks Brian

3.87 is the hipo pulley. It is not used on a non hipo 289 from the factory.

Yup, 42 Amp Alternator  (C5AF-10300-B) with the smaller single groove pulley. 

Per Bob Mannel's Small Block V8 book, for 1965 there where 2 pulley diameters offered in 65.  The larger size, 3.9" and the smaller size, 2.6".  I believe the book lists the actual pulley diameter measurement. The book notes that the Ford listed pulley diameters that could be up to 1/4" off when you take an actual measurement of the pulley diameter.  As Bob mentioned, the larger pulley was for the HIPO, so yes you want the smaller pulley.

Regarding the smaller pulley, I also noticed from the book that Ford had a running change and used two different alternator pulley, fan and pulley spacer combinations in 1965.  Before about 4/1/65 (not an exact cutoff date) the combination was 1/4" thick pulley spacer, flat center area fan and an elevated pulley stamped C5AF-10A352-B.  Sometime after 4/1/65 the combination was 5/32" thick pulley spacer, a convex center area fan and a flush mounted pulley stamped with C5AF-10A352-G or C5AF-10A352-K.  With either combination (don't mix and match!) the net result was that the pulley belt grove was same distance from the alternator housing.  Based on the May, 65 build date of your car, I would think either pulley, fan and spacer combination would be acceptable for All MCA judged classes but I could be wrong since I'm not an MCA judge.   :-\

Interesting stuff thanks.  FWIW The OE pulley on my replacement Motorcraft alternator is the C5AF-325-B single groove and measures 2.85"  Brian
