Title: 1966 Convertible Shock Tower & Braces Finish
Post by: Building 3 on August 27, 2014, 02:46:52 PM
1965 December built Dearborn 289 2V auto convertible: What is the proper black semi-gloss level for the shock towers, the braces from the shock towers to the cowl, and the convertible braces?  From what I have read on the Forum, these parts were not installed when the engine compartment was painted.  They were painted at a supplier or another Ford plant, so it makes sense that the gloss level would be different.  It is my understanding that the engine compartment is on the flatter or more satin side of "semi-gloss" so I am thinking that these parts should have a higher gloss level especially if they were dipped.  I have seen so many restored cars with all of these parts the same gloss level as the engine compartment and that does not seem to be the way it would have been at the time of the build.

The caps and the convertible braces were almost gloss black.

These items were typically dipped in paint for coverage instead of sprayed, so they will take on a slightly more glossy appearance as Mike mentioned.  There is variance, so no absolute answer.  I usually like the braces to be a little shinier than the engine bay.

...These items were typically dipped...

Would you like to elaborate on where the drip usually fell from?  I.E.... How were they hung for drying?

I don't recall.  Another detail is the cowl braces would have been zinc plated and then dipped.  Kind of interesting if one pays attention while stripping pieces like this.
