Title: Looking for 1969 Hood Pictures
Post by: Anghelrestorations on May 16, 2014, 09:57:24 PM

Im working on an ID guide for the different versions of the 1969 and 1970 hoods right now.  One of the things I am missing is pictures of what I consider an early version 1969 hood that had "pie cut outs".  Would only be visible on a hood that has not been cut for a shaker.  The same idea as this picture here, except this is from a Torino.  If anyone has this style hood let me know as I would like to add the photos.

Sean, looks like you have the right hood but yours has been cut.  Can you see the date codes stamped on the underside of the hood?

Very early hood.  Makes sense so far from what I have documented.  I assume the top side has the nonfunctional hood scoop?

yes, non functional hood scoop, but did not have grille insert as I have on another car with the faux scoop. May have been removed by the prior owner. Also did not have directional lights on backside of scoop.

Not done for very loong for some reason - all of them I've seem is on the version #2 (for lack of a better term) 69 hood.

Not sure if you need them from every plant - here are a few from San Jose. Just as a start ;)

At San Jose all so far have fallen in the 9F120xx-9F1258xx range

If you want to use one of these - I can email a higher resolution one in most case ;)

Most are cropped also

What about the early hoods with the 3 long oval cut-outs 1 long on 1 side & 2 short  on both sides of scoop hole between the hole & hinges?   Look at pics of the 69 white Shindota boss 302 prototype as it has that style hood as well as a fewothers I haveseen  on 68 early built 69 hoods.

Jeff, thanks for the pictures.

Ed, I have all those pictures and have 4 different original 1969 hoods and 2 different original 1970 hoods.  Also got pictures of the Shinoda Boss as well.  Im putting it all together right now.

I just went down to the auto body shop today and shot the underside of my hood. This is a 69 Coupe w/ 302-2v built October 1968.

Here are pics of the pie cut outs on the hood of my Oct 18, 68 San Jose built Mach1.  The best pictures I have is the ones taken to help a fellow asking for the measurements on another forum.  I also just snapped a picture of the date code towards the rear of the hood on the driver's side using a flashlight.  Sorry for the poor quality.  It appears to read 9 13 W8.

Cheers,
Tony

Hello Marcus,

You’re most welcome.  These cut-out hoods have always intrigued me and I am most eager for any new information.  Hopefully you’ll post a summary of your research.

When first purchased I assumed that my car’s hood was cut out in this manner by a previous owner. In fact, a friend who is very knowledgeable on these cars told me as much.  Sometime later I came across a factory drawing (posted below) that seems to suggest that these were in fact factory cut, much to my and especially my friend’s surprise.

Somewhere I had read that these hoods were intended for 428CJ cars, but the shaker was adopted thereby kyboshing this initial concept.

I have period magazine (don’t recall the mag’s name at the moment) containing a review of a 351W powered ’69 Mach 1 that makes specific reference to the hood cut outs.  It says that to enable a ram air effect one needs to remove the rubber seal behind the hood scoop grille and then flip the air cleaner lid upside down.  Flipping the lid upside down creates an opening to of course allow entry of the air channeled in by the hood scoop.  If by chance you don’t have this article I’ll be glad to post scans.

Cheers,
Tony

Cut outs were likely just a carry over from the 68 Torino style ram air examples

Never checked but it looks like the cut out dimensions might be exactly the same - there is a site that sells the templates for the those cut outs
