Title: Engine compartment clamp
Post by: rodster on March 28, 2014, 12:41:29 PM: I've seen these before on early cars. Pretty sure it's a owner added item but curious to know what it held and why it was installed?

Overflow bottle makes sense, guess people didn't want the cars puking all over the driveway or garage. ;)

Was overheating or coolant overflow common back in the day?

Re: Overflowing...Yes, still is if you fill the radiator to the top on an early car. Coolant needs room for expansion. I've seen a few aftermarket ones that bolt into the two radiator mounting bolts that look nice. They aren't authentic looking by any means, but functionally a good idea. Oxygen entering in and out of the radiator brings about cooling system corrosion, hence the development of the overflow closed system of the later model vehicles.

Post by: rodster on March 28, 2014, 09:55:54 PM: Don't remember my 67 289 puking coolant and it seems odd that a car would do it so often you need to add an overflow tank. Maybe the owners were always topping off the radiator or bad head gaskets were causing problems.

Post by: J_Speegle on March 29, 2014, 08:46:51 PM: I vote Puke can - the early version with the neck mount before they went to the cage frame style mount. The later style puts two additional holes in the inner fender that often get confused with the washer bag or bottle mounting holes later int he car's life. Another early style was the one with no metal just a hole through the bottle/container at the top - that would often tear at some point :(
