Title: 289 casting dates?
Post by: 65pon on February 16, 2014, 03:40:12 PM
Hi All,

I have come across a Dearborn built '65 car.
The scheduled build date is the 18th of June.  The owner says that the motor is original to to car as far as he knows and was told by the owner previous to him.
The block was cast on the 27th of June.

Is this at all possible?  I know that typically the blocks are cast a couple of weeks before the scheduled body build date, but is it impossible that the line was that far behind that the motors were ready first?

Unrelated question, how were the dates marked for the first 10 days of a month?  For example, a for block cast on the 2nd of March, were they marked:
5C02  or
5C 2  or
5C2

Many thanks!

One at a time :)

First thanks for including all the necessary info to have the discussion ;)

Fist since your car was built so close to the engine plant the times spreads can be a bit different than at the other plants.

Now we know that the projected build dates can often be off by as much three weeks earlier and later and even longer if there was some other issues like the availability of some less popular option they were having supply problems with

So with that said your car could have been built most likely somewhere between May 28th and approx July 9th

Looking at later years (same plant) using Marti reports  we see that the spread between real and projected build dates was often 1-2 days up to almost three weeks.  Though this information may not reflect the speed and demand seen in the early months following the Mustangs original release

With all that I think it is possible that the engine might be original to the car. I believe the next step is to confirm some consistency in the casting dates through the complee motor since if the block is very different than the rest of the assembly its much more likely a replacement while if there is a solid pattern it may support the idea that it is original to the car

Just my thoughts

I know that typically the blocks are cast a couple of weeks before the scheduled body build date, but is it impossible that the line was that far behind that the motors were ready first?

Engines were typically cast up to two months prior to the projected build dates from my records. For Dearborn in 65-66 I've got from weeks to 3 months though not allot of three month examples

Unrelated question, how were the dates marked for the first 10 days of a month?  For example, a for block cast on the 2nd of March, were they marked:
5C02  or
5C 2  or
5C2

Don't have a 65 Deaarborn example handy

First example I found was a 69 small block

In that example it was 9M3

The real question is the assembly date, located on a "boss" near the distributor that attaches the water pump to the block thru the timing cover.

Hi Jack,

Are you able to tell me if you casting date looks like either of:

5A5, 5A 5, or 5A05 ?

I'll have to go back and have another look at this car and see if I can read the assembly date,

Many thanks.

My 65' Dearborn car with a A code 289 has a build date of 5/7/65. As follows, engine block cast is April 21 and assembly is April 27. I THINK it says 5D21 and 5D27.

Here are a couple of pics of my PRE-resto engine (wrong color from previous owner). My car looks like this;
BODY 63A
COLOR K
TRIM 26
DATE 07S
DSO 41
VIN 5F09A718971
Again, the cast is 5D21 and the assembly is 5D27. The other pic is of the intake. There is a 5D10 on it

My car was built about a year prior to yours,( this is just as an example), Dearborn built 1964 1/2 coupe with a scheduled build date of June 30th. It still has the original drivetrain with a block casting of 4F22F. Heads are cast 4F18 and 4F19.
