I had a underdash harness customer a few weeks ago that sent me his Marti Report for his GT. The report did not include a tach dash configuration. The Mustang Recognition Guide does not talk about dashes with tachs in the GT/GTA section. Marti's By The Numbers lists an incredibly low number of tachs selected for both 1967 and 1968, although I have refurbished a higher percentage of tach harnesses than what his numbers indicate.
All of this leads me to speculate that GT's/GTA's came standard with tach dashes. True or False?
-
Wish it were true, but alas it isn't. Second owner GTA, no tach, Marti report supports. I'm always looking at the 67 GT/GTA cars and can say that the tach option is very rare. Seems to me that included is the resettable trip odometer.

John is correct. Our 67 GTA has no Tach, it was a separate option.

Might be connected to the 4 speed transmission GT cars ? Much the same as the 69 staggered shocks. This picture is of a friends March 68, SJ, 4 speed, 390, GT car. I have the Marti and it does not list the tach as an option.

Yes in 68 Ford did offer a 4spd/ tach option.

Have a '68 S code 4 speed GT, San Jose Dec '67 build. Has the tach, but not listed on the Marti so presume it either came standard with the 4 speed or the GT option in '68...

67GTA S code SJ April 67 deluxe interior no tach in my dash either, just a nice clock,
I am more surprised that these cars didn't come with a limited slip rear end

My 67 SJ,GT, 390, 4-spd includes a tach, but also does not list it seperatly on the Marti Report. This is a June 67 buid date.

Tach was std equip on 4sp 68-69

GT/GTA's with 4sp only? I have a '68 289 (c-code) 4 speed convertible and it did not have a tach.
-
My 67 GT K Code, 4 speed (export to Guatemala) has an 8G tach.
Not listed on Marti.
Note speedometer is in Kilometers.

Wow...so some 67's and some 68's came with a tach (with or without a 4 speed) and no mention on the Marti report. Very strange indeed.
I would have thought that someone had a complete list of options for 67/68 and could explain that a tach was a part of some RPO options.
Even stranger is that the particular harness in question had a rear defogger wiring built into the harness (apparently unused) because that wasn't mentioned in the Marti Report.

Here is a page from the Mustang section of the 68 Ford Option Sales Catalogue.
In the center column it offers the 4spd/tach option. and below it offers a 4spd option alone.

I thought in 68/69 that big block 4 speed cars got the tach automatically with the 4 speed option, the tach was an option for R code 4 speeds in 1970. What isn't so clear is whether S code 68's got a 6K or 8K tach's ( my 68 S code came with an 8K tach but I've seen them both ways....)

I do not know about 69's but that is not true of 68's. We have discussed the tach issue a number of times on several forums. It seems like we see the 6K tachs in earlier cars, I think the assembly plants used the 6K's till they were gone. The big blocks really did not need a 8K tach. I think it was just more efficient for Ford to just provide the 8K in all engines.

I have a 68 GT, 302, 3 speed with no tach.

Perhaps the 4V and 4Sp triggered the tach considering Charles C code and your 3 Sp. We already know some got the 6K and others the 8K. It was not an early vs late nor GT thing. My J GT is early with 8K and S non GT Cal Spec is late with 6K both 4Sp

I went back and looked at the 67 tach option it calls for 6K & 8K tachs. The 68 option only mentions 8K so it makes no sense with late production cars with the 6K tach. We may never know on this one.

On the '68 8k vs 6k issue.
My S GT coupe, Dec '67 San Jose build has an 8k tach. I recently bought a complete and original looking '68 deluxe cluster with tach and clock, it is a 6k and has an ink stamp of "Sep5" on the back. Which is anecdotal evidence of the 6ks being used "early"...

Perhaps the 4V and 4Sp triggered the tach
This may be the case, as my late 68 (July 18) NJ S code was built with an 8K tach, with no mention of it on the Marti report, and I know of 4 other S code 4 speed 68's that all have tach's , and none have it shown as an option on the Marti report ( BTW, all 4 of the other cars are fairly late NJ built, and have 8K tach's) In 69 big block 4 speeds came with the tach standard (according to the dealer brochure, and a lot of examples I've seen).
Does anyone have a Marti report showing a 68 S code 4 speed that lists the Tach as an option ??
-
I would be interested to see how the 4spd was listed on the window sticker and it's cost to see if it was the combo 4spd / tach option.
-
Seems like the discussion has focused on 68 as Midlife kind of left it opened in the original post :(
Staying with 68 and looking at just some of the Marti reports (have 500+ if I wanted to go through all of them) here is what I found
Marti reports included Shelby's and non Shelby's
- Small blocks and big blocks with automatics have the tach and trip listed in the list of options
- Small blocks with manual trans have tach and trips listed in the options
- Big blocks with manual trans don't (at least in the samples even though we know that they received the tach/trip option on Shelby's) have it listed.
In window stickers of the ones I checked
- Tach & trip were not listed separately like they were in the Marti reports. And IMHO since they were included in the price they would not be - though, since the window stickers were often typed up by the dealerships some times they are found in the base description. But since some even include additional charges for other base offerings its difficult to figure out what the dealers were doing. Either they were padding the cost of the cars or something else but that discussion will get us way off thread :(
- Have a number of small block 4 speed non-Shelby with no mention of tach
-
My recollection for the '67 "K" & "S" code cars with the 4 speed trans is that the tach came automatically bundled with the 4 speed. If you look at the suggested retail pricing sheets of the options, the "K" & "S" code 4 speed was $49.16 more expensive than the "C" & "A" code 4 speed. If I am not mistaken, that difference was the price of the stand alone tach option.

My SJ 68 with 4spd came with a tach.
