Do you mean something like the pictures below? Do you have any pictures you can post?

yes that is the location I am wondering about, I know the housing is black but the ones I have seen are all high gloss, doesn't seem right pulled off the rear drums today, suprise suprise no shoes or any thing only wheel cylinders, drums look new measure out at 10.025 ID Merry Christmas to all thanks John

The housing is a semigloss black. Not flat and not glossy .Somewhere in between. Sometimes the vent hole was marked with paint and it looks like it ran down both sides of the tube. Because of this it appears like a paint line around the housing tube. I don't know if that is what you are seeing or not but sounds like it.

thanks for clearing that up for me, were there any paint lines around the axle housing for identifying something? I have seen some on cars

You may be referring to the crème or white colored paper rear end Identification sticker that goes completely around the axle tube near the U bolts on the DS .

Around the housing ? There are no marks that originally went around the whole housing or tube on any original piece I've seem
Normally the housing itself had 2-8 different marks depending on year and style and plant . Then the center (third member) had identification, assembler, inspector and other markings again depending on year style - sometimes even marks that identified that they were filled
Guessing that "I've have seen on cars" means on "restored cars" Not something we suggest as a common practice here ;)
Before you start marking up things, Do you have all the original machined marks and finishes right? It will do you little good to place paint daubs and marks on an incompletely finished part. Marks don't get you points they (currently) can only make you lose points. Incomplete finishes and details will cost you points every time.

Guessing this is from the 67 April SJ S code. What Trans did the car have and do you know the build date and second rotation number?
-
67 GTA S code build date was April 5 67, in SanJose, has a C6 Select Shift,Cruise-O-Matic, don't understand what you mean by the second rotation number,I have Marti report would it be on that report?

The Marti report is no help here - it would have been in the upper left hand corner of your cars build sheet. The "instructions" for the second half of the assembly of your car
Some of the 60 something threads here that discuss or mention rotation numbers (picked out some 67-8 San Jose related ones
