Title: 66 GT Front Grille and Fog light bracket Finish?
Post by: 66RavenGTCoupe on November 29, 2013, 06:06:14 PM
Hi all,

Did a bit of a search and could not turn up an answer here. The colour is black of course and could have sworn that my originals were a satinish finish but was told by one of our leading judges that it should be semi gloss.

Can anyone help please?

Dan.

Maybe it is just a matter of sematics ? Satin and semigloss are two very similar descriptions for the not gloss and not flat finish.

Thanks for the reply Bob. For the sake of clarity I will change my description from satinish to flat black. :) can you tell me what it should be please?

Semi-gloss or satin is correct, flat and gloss are not. Everything on the grill including the rivets are painted. I would try to find at least three different semi-gloss shades, one for the engine compartment, one for the grill and one for brackets, engine, hood latch, battery tray. The latter should be the shiniest. There's no reason, the differences are a nice detail. Keep in mind that most brackets were dipped.

PS: The back side of the corral is almost a flat black.

what was the original finish on the fasteners that hold the fog light bracket to the grille?

If you go to the Library section of this forum and open post "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheets 64-66" you find two spreadsheets, one by part number, the other by application. Some surfing in the latter spreadsheet will give you your answer, part number and finish code.
You might consider some source document for your car's year like the Mustang Assembly Manuals.

Thanks Jim,

Row 2164 calls out 42127-s8 (zinc) and this thread http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=9375.0 references RBW used for ground and an s2 finish. The 6 screws holding on my brackets are all RBW marked so guessing phosphate?

Using the teachings of the Majha Jeff, it may be a case of plant specific hardware for the head marking in this application. My three San Jose cars all had CF head markings and they were all zinc plated. It seems Metuchen used a different supplier. The electrical assembly manual calls out zinc finish independent of head marking, so a clear zinc finish would be appropriate.
