Title: 1968 W engine code,427. Did the Mustang ever exist?
Post by: priceless on January 25, 2013, 10:11:05 AM
Did Ford ever actually produce a '68 Mustang(besides Shelby) with the W engine code 427-4V?  If so, does anyone have pics or any info?

No. Shelbys had the 427 installed at the Shelby facility. The engine type may have been blank for a 427 but the few I've seen had a "Q" code there.

Just found out some info on the SAAC forum. There was no '68 Shelby with a 427 engine. There was in fact only one(1) 1967 Shelby that was documented as having a 427 engine. And I found an article in Mustang Monthly August 2001,Page 11, that says there was never a '68 Mustang produced from the factory with a 427 engine, and that Kevin Marti's database has confirmed this.

I think it ought to be mentioned that the Ford database confirms that Ford has no "record" of any being built, but you never know what might have made it out the back door as a prototype or race vehicle sent somewhere like Holman Moody.

There have been rumors that some were sent out the back door with 427's, but who knows if that's just a wild story.

I'm just saying that Ford had no "documents" of a record. Yes, I'm sure someone at sometime during that period, may have slipped something out the door, only leaves us to "Imagine'.

The MM 8/01 issue does go on to say that it was verified No "factory Built" Mustangs with a 427.  Just going by what the article says and what evidence Kevin Marti has researched.

Big deep subject

Have seen a couple of fake 68's with 427 over the years (Vins and tags all changed)

There were a 2-3 67 Shelby's that had the engines changed at Shelby

Have seen one 67 fastback with a 427 Vin that was equipped as you would expect to find (since the engine was gone along time ago) and a couple of others reported from people who raced for Ford in the 60's

IMHO its a stretch but a possibility based on what I've seen in person

Yes, there were Mustangs with 427's factory backed by Ford for "racing purposes". But, No "documented" factory Mustangs to have came off the assembly line with a 427.

That's my understanding.

Shelby 8T02S13451900957 came with a 390HP and then got a 427 installed. It was owned by a local Ford dealer who sold it to do some landscaping.

390HP?

AFAIK the HP was a 62-63 tri-power setup used on Galaxies, Mercurys and Tbirds.  Do you mean a 390GT?

The one I saw showed no singes of ever being raced as opposed to the cars converted by Dearborn Steel, H & M and the "factory" shops.

Guess the challenge is what we would accept as "documentation" - you are aware that not all of the Ford  VIN's they have on record  match what was stamped on the cars - right ?

It's the designation given on page 73 of "The Mustang Production Guide, vol 2, 1967-73". Of course it was spelled out but to keep the text message crowd placated, I shortened it.
