Title: '68 Convertible Interior Header Trim Finish
Post by: Oz390 on January 17, 2013, 08:55:53 PM
Have seen references to hard/satin chrome and argent paint.  Is it one or the other, or was this a running change that went from one-to-the-other somewhere during production.  Or plant based (which I kinda doubt, but ya never know)

My 68 S (San Jose Dec 67) has what appears to be OEM and is a softer chrome, so I guess "hard" chrome.  Have seen some refer to it as "hard tool" chrome as well....

Have heard the Drake repros are a very good match to OEM finish (yes not OEM and correct, but cost factors are a consideration), anyone compared?

???

Satin chrome was used on header and visor bases for the entire 68 year. No argent paint.

Same thing on rear-view mirror base and the ball stud that gets glued to the windshield.  Ford made quite an effort to reduce glare, must have had complaints from the 65-67 cars.  Or, maybe part of the Ralph Nader stuff going on at the time...

So local chrome shops here (Brisbane Australia) go kinda cross-eyed at satin/hard chrome... whats the go for restoring, is it find some specialist and spend bigger $$ than plain chroming costs, which is pretty staggering here.... a small box of 8-10 pieces (door handles, running pony, etc was over $800... which seemed a bit dear to me.

Scared to think what a "special" process must cost...
