Title: More 67 S code finish questions
Post by: 390Pony on November 02, 2012, 05:06:40 PM
Finishing up a few more brackets etc. this weekend. Should the below have semi-gloss black finish ?
Alternator bracket
Alternator adjusting bracket/arm
Coil bracket
And the radiator top support bracket finished in semi-flat (same as engine bay black) if you will.

Thanks in advance for the help. :D

Finish of tone and amount of gloss would differ on about every original piece painted semi-gloss black since many were painted in different parts of the country, different days, batches of paint and different weather conditions

You didn't include what paint the car was built in but in general I would agree with all except for the coil bracket but that's just me ;)

Phopshate and oil for that one

Now that you have let the cat out of the bag, or the coil as stated, what were the finishes of the hex head screw (10-32X 1.475 in long - not listed in AMK Ford Fasteners) and hex or square nut? As the coil and bracket appeared to have been sub-assembled, and the replacement from the Ford Car Part book references a round head slotted screw (27185-S2, 10-32X1 5/8 in long), the original factory hardware is "nebulous".

I have often seen the nut and machine screw as a soft silver finish. I have also seen the machine screw zinc phosphate too.

Thanks for the help...I was about to spray the coil bracket black :-[....I've been using a few different brands of rattle can "semi-gloss black" to finish individual parts in an attempt to duplicate the effect you mention Jeff. Thanks again for the help.

Here's a couple of pictures of a painted coil bracket. The bracket was put on the coil while the coil's marking was still wet and you can see the mirror image on the inside surface of the bracket. The bracket is painted a gloss (almost) black, the coil is painted a lesser gloss, more semi-gloss, the bolt/screw is, as Bob states, a soft silver as is the nut. Both were painted as well. The hex head bolt/screw has a "L" head marking. The date code is "5CBC" which I assume would be 1965, March, second week, 3rd shift (? on the last "C" for the shift). I assume this came from a San Jose built Mustang as most of the cars in the San Jose area were built in the San Jose plant (actually in Milpitas).
I can't answer for 1967 coils, but this one is painted and I'll continue to paint mine.

Jim, I have seen 65 66 bracket painted too. In 67 apparently a changover was happening (started in 66 I think) and it was highly more likly to see the bracket on the 67 one zinc phosphate.

My point was to not run out and declare all coil brackets, 64 thru 66, to be phosphated, as some have (at least locally). There remains a debate as to when and where (plants) the change was implimented. And the question about I-6 use remains.

Don't think anyone did if you read the posts - the question was specifically  67

As for 65-66  I've rarely found black painted ones on original early Mustangs but more often on other and earlier Fords. Also we use to paint them black (the standard) back in the 70-80's in the western show timeline

I was assembling some parts after plating on which I did the following:
Long machine thread clamp bolt: P&O
nut : S7
Bolt, bracket to head: S7
Coil Bracket with reinforcement "U" on interface to head; Clipped one side: SG black.

Now I see this and wonder is the bracket is really P&O due to better knowledge?
The rule book says SG black, P&O or natural for 67/68.

Picture might be better as you've lost me in your description

P&O is what I've removed over the years

As far as what a rule book shows I would not use that as in indicator in all cases of what the original finish was just what will be accepted with no deductions at a show run by that organization. Rules are not always written to show just what was originally done but also often include other considerations

Pic attached. My 65 coil bracket does not have this reinforcement.

I understand about the rules -- just what lead me down the primrose path of a SG finish!
