Title: Different style digits odometer?
Post by: 66candy on September 23, 2012, 01:45:58 PM
I'm getting old and I need glasses but I noticed that there are two different style digits used in 65-66 Mustangs odometers. Difficult to explain but when you compare the two different styles you know exactly what I mean  ;). I took three digits from two different odometers from Ebay pictures:

Did anyone noticed this before? Is it a 65-66 year change over, factory or supllier thing?

Never noticed it before - good catch.  Without any other data I would thing its a supplier thing. But collecting more examples with their dates and vins might point to another answer

My bad...all four are like the ones on the right, including a Metuchen Jan, 1966 car.  The others are from unknown factories.

Is there a case from anyone for a round style that isn't quite the same as the ones in the photos by 66candy?  My June '65 Dearborn has round style digits but the "3" is a bit different than those in his photos.  I have 2 photos showing a black and a white "3" digit.  See photobucket pics:

Are the round digits for the GT style odometers different than standard dash panels?

Yeah, I noticed this like over 20 years ago..  From what I could gather,  The square style was used in 1965 -Probably just a different supplier..  I don't ever remember recalling seeing the square style in a 1966 car.. I think the round was used for bothe years 65/66.

Wow, I thought everyone knew about this one..

It sounds like a good poll is in order for this..

Tony, I'm like you and have known this for a long time as well.

It's a different supplier and they also won't interchange, the combination
of wheels is a different length. My Oct 64 fastback (Falcon style cluster)
has the rounder style numbers. It seems to be pretty random on
which type you will see on 65/66 Mustangs. In looking in salvage
yards at 60's Fords the early 60's cars all look to have the square
type numbers and in 65/66 both are used then starting in 67 they
all seem to be the round style.
