Hey guys,
question on the top of the fenders where they bolt to the body,
I have a car that has one side al flat and the other side with stamped/raised triangles??
The stamped fender has no number stamped on this section but has numbers stamped everywhere else.
does anyone know what this means?
Thank you
-
Sorry other way around, the other fender with no triangle on it has no numbers on that section where it bolts to the car
Thanks

Sometime in the 66 model year they added the triangles to the drivers side fender . I suspect they were for crash crush control . Service part fenders had them also and usually no date code stamps.
-
Ok Thanks,
This one is the drivers side and has the date code on them.
The other does not have the triangles and does not have date code either on the top, has the numbers elsewhere.
I am in the process of restoring this fastback to concourse condition and want to know what is the correct scenario.
What are the date codes indicating on the picture i attached? or how do you verify what date is what?
Regards Lou

The fender with the date code is stamped 3 16 2
March 16th second shift at the stamping plant
Now you would have to compare that to the projected build date (since its a 65-66) and compare the dates to see if it possibly could not have come with the car - if your going that route with your restoration

Hi Lou,
The date code is the stamping date of the fender in the picture you provided. The stamping date should be fairly close to scheduled build date of your car as noted on the data plate. There is a bit of debate as to why the raised triangles appears but the most common thinking is that it is for crumbling in a crash. The cut over happened in either late 65 production or early 66 production. Some cars have a mis-matched set of fenders (e.g. only one fender has the raised triangles) and some cars have the raised triangles on both fenders around the cut-over period.
The date code decodes as follows
3 16 2 (March 16 Shift 2)
The first digit is the month - in your case March. The second set of digits is the day of the month - in your case the 16th. Finally, the last digit is the shift that the part was stamped - in your case shift 2.

Ron

Do you happen to have a picture of this Ron to share?
Will look through my files for a possible change over date again

thanks for help guys,
The date on the car is May 09, 1966
So the gaurd is correct for this car being 2 months earlier?

It would help to know what plant since lead and shipping times would be different. With your plant (now that we have a projected build date) we can compare your dates to other know cars from the same

the earliest unrestored/original SJ car that i have owned with the raised triangles on the fender is stamped November 1965 (11 65) from discussions many years ago with Jeff Speegle, Mike Murray and Charles Turner we put a change time frame around october/november 65. think Jeff also had a TSB that indicated the change as well.

If I remember right, the "improved" hood design also was changed about the same time. Although, has been a while since I looked into that. Some may be aware from previous research that there are 4 different hoods used from 64.5-66.
