I now wonder why I ever spent so much time tweaking the rear valance on my '69. I can't relate just how much time I spent trying to close up the gap between the valance and the quarter panels.
Take a look at a photo that Jeff has posted on this site of a brand new '68. The valance clearance is the same width on my '69 and THAT car is new! LOL
This photo finally puts my mind to rest!

has your car ever been hit? have your quarters ever been reworked/patched? original valance?

Is that a gigantic dent in that '68 valence, near the LH backup light, or is it just a trick of the photo?
BTW, the original Ford valence on my '69 fits horribly too.

No believe that is one of the spot welds for the bottom bracket. Worker might have been a little late in removing his foot from the pedal before he lifted the panel. Sure the size of this depends allot on angle. Most of the time this is filled in with puddy by body shops when restoring cars
As far as this example looks like a pretty even gap from top to bottom unlike the 1/2" plus you can find on some reproductions ;) IMHO they should not be touching just a even small gap - looking at other original examples
