Can someone give me a good solid answer as to what the correct screws are that were used on the tank on a San Jose car. The tank had been taken off the car years ago. Thanks!

Per the book (1967 Mustang Electrical Assembly, pg 14), it is a blunt tip, hex washer head, phosphated sheet metal screw, 31527-S2 14-14X1/2 in L, 3/8 in hex, 1/2 in dia washer. The washer tank (three places) is the only place on a 67 where this screw is used, but it is common on 68 thru 73 in many other applications. It is available from AMK products.

I'm going to be critical here but what the book says and what actually ended up being used can be two different things. This is one of those times. If the blunt tip phosphate screw was not used the sharp tip zinc silver one was. On the many 67 Shelby's I have worked on and personally observed over the years the vast majority had the silver sharp tipped screw with a diamond makers mark securing the washer reservoir. I have no reason to believe a SJ non Shelby would be any different proportionately. Armond if it were my car I would use the silver ,diamond marked screw but that is just me. One style was what was engineered for the car to be used and the other was what was substituted frequently for what ever reason . Nether style would be considered wrong because of this IMHO.

'68 calls out 55891-S2, same 14-14 1/2"L 3/8 hex head, but pointy, and P&O finish. I have 4 68's all had pointy. Most appeard to be originally P&O, but hard to tell on such old worn parts.

Looking at pictures I've got of 67 late San Jose examples I would would suggest (though right now would not deduct for the zinc ones) the Diamond design hex head screws in phosphate and oil as shown in the two examples below

You are refering to the 68.5 GT/CS Cobra Jet right?
I have P&O on my car (March 68 SJ) after an MCA judge deducted points for having the zinc. I concur that the "books" call out P&O and think it was most often used.

Armond, in fairness I thought you were working on a 67 SJ car thanks for the clarifaction. My observations on SJ would be relavent to 67 which is what I thought you were inquiring about. The best of luck on your build.

I got the year messed up too. That screw, the one with the pointy end (I just love this high-tech jargon) 55981-S2 (vs 55891-S2, OZ) has the same dimensions as 31497-S2 which is used on 64 thru 68 (mostly 64-66) with both the diamond head and "D" head marking (although the "D" may be more clear zinc, -S8, finished uses). As both 31497-S2 and 55981-S2 have the diamond head marking (same manufacturer), there may some other difference, like grade (although not marked), undercut head (aka UBS style) or a manufacturing process specification difference. From 1968 thru 1973, 55981-S36 (and -S36M) were used for most of the underhood grounds, brake lines, etc.
Looking at Jeff's pictures, the head seems to not be as tall as either 31497-Sx or 559841-Sx that I have.
