Title: GT Stripe
Post by: priceless on March 04, 2012, 11:28:59 AM
I am helping a fellow club member work/restore on his 66 GT convertible. The Mustang has had a color change(or two) over the past few decades.  I do know that the original exterior color was code "F"(arcadian blue) and the interior color code is "22". He's wanting it as close to original as he can get it. Our question is, what color was the original GT stripes ?   Thanks for any help.

The stripes would probably be black....

According to "How To Restore You Mustang" by Larry Dobbs and Donald Farr the GT stripes would be a dark blue with exterior color F, Arcadian Blue. No other stripe option is shown.
I love conflict - the "65 Ford Mustang Illustrated Fact Book" shows black only. I yield the floor to Jeff or Charles (and don't go into "using an odd document", I'm not in the Charmin crowd).

The '66 (not '65) Mustang Illustrated Facts Book shows the dark blue stripe as the only option for Arcadian Blue exterior color.

Yup, you're correct, I had the 65 book out for another question. If you had a Wimbeldon White car with a blue interior you got the blue stripe also. I see that it's available NPD, $11.25. I remember some comments in the past that the aftermarket stripe kits do not have enough length to wrap into the wheel like factory stripes do.

I was never able to find a correct blue reproduction stripe and ended up using NOS stripes on that blue GT convertible that Phill posted the pic of.  Think I might have some samples of it I saved.

BTW, the car in that pic is the one I posted about going to auction again recently...

As we've discussed before there are documents and sales stuff that suggests color combinations but if the buyer is having the car built other colors were available and could be specified. Because of this I think any of use would be pushing it if we deducted for a "wrong color"  just me ;)

Well, I think it has been discussed many times that something very far outside of the norm generally requires documentation by the owner.  Red stripes on an Arcadian Blue GT, for instance, would be something I would have no trouble deducting a point or two for if there was no supporting documentation from the owner.

In regards to the original question here, I believe that dark blue stripes would be the norm for an Arcadian Blue 65-66 GT.  I might write a comment on the judging sheet if I saw black stripes, though, instead of deducting points.

Would the different color stripe be reflected as a special order addition to the DSO similar to a special paint?

Don't believe so since the color of the stripe (and availablity) is a regular production item
