on factory original 69 BB what is the finish of the clamp that surrounds the starter and the rear cap. Thanks Lu

Black. The entire starter should be black except for the terminal stud. Paint was also stopped short of edge where it contacts bellhousing (soft edge) to allow ground

Agreed good info - just don't copy the finishes shown there. Maybe we need to send Scott a few pictures ;)
This is basically what we see.... with this much or less black on the aluminum snout

[/quote]Notice the paper gasket under the band clamp in the picture Jeff posted. That is a detail that is easy to reproduce but left off on the vast majority of restored starters I ever see. It is a brown paperlike gasket material under the black paint.

great photos guys.......yes please send them to Scott and I am sure he will post for a reference on the 428site.......
one thing to be aware of when buying a rebuilt one or getting rebuilt make sure they keep the orig nose cone......
I think there is a long and short version......
at least there is for the starter on my 1970 351W and it caused probs with engaging the flywheel with wrong nose cone

Where did that picture come from?

Here is another picture of a less then NOS BB starter off of a survivor 69 GT500 that I wanted to present to show the consistency of appearance between the service part appearance and the assemblyline installed appearance.

Just one in the database. Believe its an early service replacement/NOS one

Here are some pictures of a NOS C9AF-B starter for details. NOS,never messed with. Not a rebuilt unit.Use/save/delete as needed! This is to show the details ONLY, not the correct numbers on the case! Please note that. 428 CJ unit would be AUTOLITE C8AF, not C9AF.
