Looking at a 1966 GT Fastback, door plate shows October 30 date code (30K) but A code 289 casting shows
may 20, 1965 (5K20 0 C5AE-6015 E) claimed to be original engine. Has anyone ever seen date codes this far apart? Thanks

Go back and reread your original date codes. May 20 would be "5E20". And blocks do get "forgotten", but maybe not from May to October.

Since this is a 66 there is really not concrete way to tell when the car was built. Biggest date difference (scheduled/projected date verses actual build date was over 6 months
Would hate to try to document or prove your case based on what we know
Next step would be the assembly date or date from the engine ID tag though those may bring up other issues
