What do people think about adding LeMans stripes to a 1967 Shelby? I am more of a purist and don't think that I should add them since they didn't come from the factory that way. But, they did get added at the dealership and they sure make the car stand out. I am in a quandary.

don't so it. it would ruin the originality imo.

Since your asking - I wouldn't add them to a car that didn't have them and haven't in the past.

I never cared for the stripes with the styling of the 67 the stripes are too much. If you are still unsure you could always try vinyl that way it?s not permanent.

How do you know for sure that they were added at the dealership?

You know what would make a car stand out? Not having them and having the other details correct.
Too many 1967s have them.

If the stripes are a "documented" dealer added option, you have entered the realm of "I don't like them, but I got to keep them".

I am not aware based on SAAC 67 Shelby registrar information of a documented dealer installed stripes other then the on 67402F4A00544 . If a documented dealer installed stripe was confirmed then it would be a surprising revelation. In concours venues there have been many attempts over the decades to show confirming evidence of proper pre delivery stripes install however counterfeit docs not matching factory docs and here say testimonials have been met with push back. The closest that I have seen has been a dealer invoice for stripe install 10 years after delivery. It was a good loop hole attempt to justify but it was not accepted.

My dads '67 GT350 (02078) did not have LeMans stripes and I preferred that they were absent. Im a 'Less is More' kind of guy and it seems like every '67 Shelby I see has them. I think the body styling is so incredible anyway and the stripes dont add to the styling.

I guess it stays without. Thanks for the opinions. I only mentioned dealer install since I had read stories that they may have been put on by dealers at the purchasers request knowing that the factory didn't put them on. I guess if the dealers didn't put them on, a lot of body shops had work since they are on a lot of 1967"s.

Very likely some stripes got painted on by Ford dealers but apparently it happened some time after the cars were sold new. The line in the sand so to speak of if a change is considered original is typically if things were done prior to the first owner taking delivery. It was apparently very rare that it happened prior to delivery. The way I remember it in the early 70's was that independent body shops did the vast majority of work personalizing owners cars as the Ford dealers were too expensive.

Kind of like the news. You can't believe everything you read and just about never 100% of the story. Same in the car world. IMHO Initially, look and consider, any story with a "pinch of salt" will serve you well

Would say that just as many owners added or had a friend add them back in the late 60's In fact around here there were not many with them . For me it appeared to be something the second or third owners added. For the first owners they attracted too much attention from those who you didn't want to attract ::)
