Just wanted to confirm here on a 1967 Mustang, like in the photos here, what others have seen. Would all the pieces of the vent be body color or is the inside of the vents black based on original cars?

My conclusion was body color

From your second posted picture the one panel appears to be semi-gloss black with evidence of a repaint over it. The thin steel panel is the questionable one
Will merge both topics in a day or so to keep them all together

Thanks for the comments and link to the previous thread. I have a few more of these vents at my shop that I will take apart and look at but from what I see I think I agree body color is probably correct for everything you see from outside of the car. The piece seen from inside the car is black. Would make most sense as well.

I've taken apart quite a few of these from their original state. All were body color except for the interior most panel was black.

This weekend I was able to take a few more apart and can confirm that these were definitely painted body color. So that means the outside trim piece and the screen. The inside piece is black plastic. And while at it the screws holding it all together are zinc dichromate from what I see here as well. Mystery solved for now.
The white overspray you see is from when the car was repainted from green to white.

For the inside piece there was a change from pot metal to plastic, but I don't know the date. My Dec 66 SJ car has pot metal.

Yet ANOTHER running change? ::)

I have a spare part (unknown if 67 or 68) that have the C7 cast numbers with plastic innards.
It's interesting that the thread size is cast into them.
See also part number and vendor.
No cast date found.

This car here I am working on and posted photos here is built mid November 1966 and is plastic and these are the original pieces.
-
The one on the left is cast and the one on the right is plastic. The cast one has a FOMOCO logo. It also has additional cast bars in 4 of the ribs while the plastic one has none. I also notice the cast one has a wider gap at the one end then the plastic one which is much closer. The weight difference is huge with the cast one weighing in at 1.4 lbs and the plastic one weighing in at just .4 lbs. Most of the cars here in upstate NY are from Metuchen with some Dearborn cars thrown into the mix. I have a box of these louvers and have both cast and plastic backings.

Thanks for posting the photos...thats great information. Haven't studied these close enough to realize there was two versions, but now we know. I would tend to agree the early versions would be cast and then the plastic ones were made as they probably were cheaper to produce as well.
