Hello all,
Looking for a little advice. The number on my solenoid is D2AF-11450-AA. There's also a Motorcraft stamped on it. Is that from 1972?
If it is, what should it be? And, what are my options? Repo?
And my gas cap. It doesn't fit very well, and I don't think it's the correct one. The only letters on it are M F 5. I don't know what that means. Options for a 1966 gas cap? Repo?
Thanks in advance

The D2 Motorcraft starter relays were introduced in 1972. Since they are still currently being made and sold by Ford, there is no way to tell what year it was made, other than to say it was in 1972 or later.
The D2 Motorcraft versions are good reliable solenoids. Repro Fomoco / Autolite solenoids are out there but my experience with them has been terrible. Hopefully one day a good one will become available.

I tried two brand new D2 versions on my 67...cost me a ton of time in trouble. 2nd one, box clearly marked "MADE in China"...1st one not marked, but I assume it was.
The solenoids would stick immediately and in turn, attempted to operate my starter by backfeeding the tiny ignition wire, back to the ignition switch...as we all know, a 14 guage wire cannot directly operate a starter so meltdown occurred.

That's weird. The ones I buy are in boxes that say "Made in USA" on them. Never have had an issue but then again I never bought any that said made in China - and never would.

Should look like the one in the first picture in the thread below - marked 2071966 - Retangle FoMoCo style

Repo may be your best bet at this point depending on to what level your building your car to. There are a few details you can improve on as mentioned in a couple of other prior threads - Rivet sealant and off white sealant at toothed washer to main base

Is this for a repainted car or for a car with an older or original paint job? A new reproduction may stand out on an original paint car while an older one with some age might stand out on a freshly painted car.
Clean the original to evaluate the condition and make you choice from there. Can it be polished and the emblem repainted? If not them you have service replacements (NOS) or reproduction. Again based on what your end goal is for the car

Wow. Electrical problems are the worst. I sure don't need a meltdown.
I guess a reliable solenoid from 1972 is better than an un-reliable one from 1966. I'll look at the repo's, though. But now I know what I'm looking for. Great picture. Glad I asked!
This is for a car with original paint. Maybe I should have explained a little better. It doesn't fit tight, no emblem, there's no MUSTANG on it, there's not even a FORD on it. I don't know what it's meant for. Seems like a generic locking gas cap. How much are NOS gas caps if I can find one?

Original typically work or do not. Not unusual to find 50 year old unit still working fine. It's the reproductions and overseas knock offs that people sometimes (others would describe as often) stick producing a run on of the starter. When that happens its no fun and you hope that you didn't tighten the battery cables to the battery post to tightly

I'll keep an eye open for an original solenoid. If I can't find one, then I'll just keep what I have.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like fun.
Thanks, again, everyone!

Starter solenoids are often overlooked items in older junkyards, and are usually quite cheap. Obviously, a used one isn't quite up to concours or thoroughbred snuff, but if you're looking for a unit that will work for a long time in the future, those that pass muster from a JY are worth considering. Plus, you have the option of all FLM products during the years in question.
