Title: 68 Dearborn manual steering
Post by: preaction on December 17, 2020, 08:45:19 PM
There is a thread about most of these parts that is labled San Jose so I wanted to verify if any may be different for a Dearborn car if thats possible. These parts came from one car which is a manual steering car one of my questions is about power steering tie rods are they different shape from a manual steering application ?  Would  the pink paint be typical for a manual steering center link ? The rusty complete tie rod assembly is not part of my  research.

Parts books show that service replacements are the same inners and outers for power steering and manual.

Yes pink is typically the make that identifies a manual steering component. You may find a second  colored daub on the center link

Will have to look at some pictures to see if I have any close up's for the hardware and head marks to compare

The inner and out tie rods are the same PS or manual. For those reading the Drag link is specific to manual and a different style for PS. The top adjusting sleeve that is connected to the tie rods in the picture is a later model replacement.I'll let others comment further.

Jeff, Bob, thanks for the responses. Would the pink assembly ID mark be applied all the way around the link and as wide as the remaining pink paint ? Also only one outside tie rod has a witness mark of yellow paint would this be reppplied as a daub and used on both outer tie rods ?

Would the black paint on the steering box  be typical for a late 68 Dearborn also ? In the pic there is some black on the pitman arm IIRC these would be natural ?

It was painted with a small brush after the box being installed probably while leaning over the front fender reaching down. Consequently applications varied. Although the pitman arm was not meant to be painted I can see paint being dripped onto the pitman arm during the steering box top paint application .

Normally the worker would not take the time to go all the way around the shaft/rod though if the brush had just been loaded with paint it could have flowed around it as it sat drying. Every one is different sometimes its a daub with runs other times you can see a brush stroke

If I look across the 67-69 period I have mixed findings so would not suggest adding these until we/you have more cars documented. Nice thing is that can be added later with ease given the part and location
